User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Extrem Musclecars: High Horsepower Straight from the factory

Excellent text and information with racing photos that I have never seen before, especially after 30 years following this subject.

2 Stars Extreme Mistakes
Extreme has become an overused word. These cars were not the norm, but they were available from certain dealers. Agreed; no forewords in the book. What really bothers me is the numerous grammatical errors and misspellings. Here’s an example: ‘the block was bored to .30′. I’m sure it means 0.030 over, but bothersome to me. This makes me suspect the other “facts and figures” in the text. Obviously the proof reader was absent that day. They even misspelled one driver’s name when the proper spelling is very clearly seen on the car door in the picture. I expect better. I do give it good marks for the pictures; many, clear and interesting. Money better spent elsewhere.

Update 1-12-08:

Factory Lightweights is a much better book, it’s available right here at Amazon and is the better value within the same category of cars/ interest. You can tell more research and author excitement went into this publication. I recommend it over this particular book.

5 Stars extreme muscle cars: the factory lightweight legacy
very impressed with book. not only did they cover popular lightweight race cars they covered cars that werent popular during this drag racing era.

4 Stars Different Strokes…
Know this first off - yes, the cover you see here is incorrect. Amazon really needs to update the photo. Yes, there are no fowards by Dick Brannan, Arnie Beswick, and Hayden Proffitt, which is a bummer. Could it be that Krause Publications purchased the rights for this book from another publisher and changed a few things? Who knows. Yes, the text could have been better. It’s not horrible, but could have been more professional. I thumbed through this book at a local book store, so I knew what I was getting. However, once you get passed the above things, it’s one cool book. Lots of pictures, many of them vintage, and most are in color. At least this book tries to give the reader a general flavor of the 1960’s 1/4 mile scene. This would be a great book for a general enthsiast, not for a hardcore fanatic who has a good deal of knowledge on the subject. Do yourself a favor - buy it used at the cheapest price in the best condition.

1 Star Save Your Money
The cover states that there are forwards written by Dick Brannan, Arnie Beswick and Hayden Proffitt. My copy contained no forwards of any kind. Actual facts and research are words that can only be used loosely to describe this book. Most of it reads like a compilation of material pulled together from previously published sources, and written poorly. I was anticipating this book, but once I knew who the authors were (read some reviews on their other titles), my expectations were lowered accordingly. I am a factory lightweight fan, but can’t recommend this book for even a novice who is interested them. Wait until it’s in a bargain bin if you have to have it.

5 Stars Superb
The photos & in-depth descriptions were far beyond what I expected. I’m hoping for a sequel.

5 Stars Know a motorhead? Get them this book!
Wow.

I own hundreds of automotive books, but “Class Racing Engines” is the one that I read over and over. It combines deep technical information, fantastic photos, rare blueprints, and most important of all, Ludvigsen’s unique ability to place things within a historical context.

What I like most about this book is how it puts you right in the shoes of the engine designer. What should the valve angle be? Hemispherical combustion chamber? Materials? Number of bearings? You get the picture… this book gets you deep into motor design and then wallows around in it. It’s almost a sinful delight to read.

5 Stars Classic Racing Engines reviewed by a Kansas Rancher
I’m a Kansas Rancher who works with technology based at best in the 1970’s. Bailing wire and duct tape can fix most of my problems. Ludvigsen writes for my understanding level; no high math or esoteric physics, just how the engine was designed; what new, different, or improved insights were polished to make a winner out of the raw product. From the individual product of the designer of the Kuchen 2-liter of 1952 to products of cubic money and scores of engineering departments of major manufactures like the Honda V-12 of 1992, Ludvigsen explains the reasons the design worked, why problems happened, and how the engine contributed to the evolution of mechanical knowledge. I enjoyed reading and using it as a frame of reference.

Car and Drivers American Road Warriors Classic Muscle Cars

September 11, 2009 by Classic Cars · Leave a Comment

Car and Drivers American Road Warriors Classic Muscle Cars

From America’s most popular automotive magazine, the editors at Car and Driver present a one of a kind look at classic American muscle cars. With engines made for speed and power and a body to match, these are some of the coolest cars ever made. This tour of the best of these classic cars contains original articles from the cars’ first releases, detailed road test entries that review each car in depth, and vintage ads. Each car is depicted in full color and includes detailed specifications, including performance specs, dimensions, transmission, and engine type. The introduction sets the stage for “pro-racing in the Sixties,” with “the youth market, the drags and street racing; cheap gas and long Saturday nights; a fledgling Car And Driver hunting its identity.” This amazing book even includes a jacket that doubles as a poster, the perfect gift for any lover of classic American cars.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars I swear I heard Motown music while reading
I bought this book for a friend who’s a refurbisher of muscle cars. I’m absolutely, positively keeping the book and maybe he’ll get a case of oil or something in its place. For anyone who remembers the automobile era of 1962-1972, this book is a treasure. The writing is exciting, the car specs and test results are informative, and the pictures simply jump off the page. Remember the car called “The Judge?” That’s right “The Judge” has a section with glossy orange picture, spoiler and all.

I couldn’t help opening the book up on the bus ride home after buying it. No less than five guys on the bus gathered around me to ooh and aah while reminiscing about the cars in the book. Everyone seemed to have a story as well as a favorite car. I’m sure we all resembled fishermen sitting around talking about the big barracuda that got away. Speaking of barracuda’s, yep its in here, along with the “Super Bee,” the “Road Runner,” the “Duster” and the “Mustang Boss.” So you see what I mean when I say you can hear Motown sounds playing in the background while remembering these beautiful machines of muscle and power.

GTO is well represented throughout the book. For those who don’t know and should feel ashamed of themselves for it, the classic picture on the dust cover is that of a GTO Tempest, not to be confused with the Ferrari GTO. And on the back dust cover you’ll find an advertisement that says “Free Poster Inside The Cover.” Can’t find it? Feel like you got cheated? Don’t worry, its there. Just take the dust cover off the book and flip it around. There is where you’ll find a full length glossy of the most beautiful pin up to ever lay herself out for a shutterbug. She’s Beautiful, buy her and get rid of that virtual copy of her on your desktop. She’s much better to observe in hard copy or on a wall.

5 Stars A Great Book !!!
This is a wonderful book especially if you are into cars.I bought this for my son and he loves it.Very informative about cars we will soon only remember.

5 Stars Wow
Wow. Anyone who is a fan of American Muscle cars needs this book. Beautifully produced in coffee table format, it’s all there to help you relive the glory days of American Muscle. Phenomenal photos, road test results, specs, and stories as they originally appeared in the pages of Car and Driver. Very well done and laid out in good, chronological order, taking you from the birth of the muscle car through to the sad ending, brought on by insurance companies, gas prices, and environmental concerns. I’d say the only people who will be disappointed are American Motors fans since there were no stories or reviews on AMX’s, Javelins, or any other AMC cars. Other than that, two thumbs up.

5 Stars Car and Driver
Very fast delivery, price was great. I wish the book had more pictures, but my 16 yr. old son loved it for Christmas.

Car Collecting Everything You Need to Know

September 8, 2009 by Classic Cars · Leave a Comment

Car Collecting Everything You Need to Know

In today’s market, Businessweek recently remarked, “it’s hard to get hurt buying a good collector car. If you do your homework, buy the right car, and enjoy it sensibly, you’ll maximize the return on your investment.” This book is aimed at making just such a rewarding purchase possible. For anyone considering buying a collector car, whether for profit or pleasure, veteran appraiser and restorer Steve Linden clearly outlines the pitfalls to avoid, rules to follow, factors to consider, and terms and procedures to know. His book provides an introduction to the process of buying a collector car, with sections looking at the special issues that arise before, during, and after a purchase, as well as a chapter devoted to general questions.

Choosing and locating the right model, budgeting, purchasing at auctions (on-line, local, and out-of-state), insuring, restoring, and maintaining; Linden addresses all of these topics in an expert and accessible way. His book also contains helpful checklists–covering questions for sellers, documentation, and inspections–as well as a glossary and a complete appendix of resources. The result is a unique and invaluable reference, one that no prospective collector should be without.

Classic Ford F Series Pickup Trucks 1948 1956 Truck Color History

September 6, 2009 by Classic Cars · Leave a Comment

Classic Ford F Series Pickup Trucks 1948 1956 Truck Color History

In 1948, the Ford Motor Company restyled its pickup line and identified each model with an F designation, from F-1 for their half-ton to F-8 for their three-ton. That classic era of Ford pickups is captured in this colour history devoting one chapter to each year in the F-Series’ first nine years. Featured are interviews with retired Ford designers and engineers, period advertisements, and much more.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars average book
This is an average book. The specifics and detailed photos I was looking for in the book weren’t there. What was was a bunch of info already pasted over the internet, including photos and dialog.

5 Stars Classic Ford F series Pickup Trucks
An excellent book. Does exactly what it says on the cover. Detailed and informative text, with lots of entertaining and well written information. Well illustrated throughout with both monochrome and full colour pictures. Including period ads and photos and recent photos of restored and customised examples of Ford trucks. Highly recommended

5 Stars Classic Ford F-Series Pickup Trucks: 1948-1956
Great book, tons of pictures. Good value, would purchase again.

4 Stars Great photos and interesting stories I hadn’t heard before.
The photography was excellent and the stories and details on Ford collectable trucks were quite interesting. If you are into old car or truck history or collecting, this is a great addition to your library. Buy it!
